Mt. Wilson Descent

Post by redrocksguide » Tue Feb 13, 2018 9:46 pm

Climbers are often tempted to try and descend from Mt. Wilson via the south fork of Oak Creek Canyon. This often ends with a mini epic as climbers try and negotiate the maze of gullies on that side of the mountain. Even the easiest routes usually involve some rappels. Much better is to descend into First Creek. From the summit descend the easy ridge westwards to reach the limestone in 20-30 minutes. From here, scramble down easy slabs and gullies to the south to reach the upper part of First Creek Canyon. The descent of First Creek is straightforward but is a little bushy towards the top, and involves endless boulder hopping until the bottom of the canyon is reached. Tiring and tedious, but straightforward. 3 Hrs.
